Welcome to Rutz Zollhaus
Nestled on the lush banks of the Landwehr Kanal in Kreuzberg, the building boasts a rich history dating back to its construction in 1901. Architect Ludwig Hoffmann was renowned for his designs of even small functional buildings in an elaborate and detailed manner. Originally intended as a depot for the city cleaning service and later repurposed as a payment control point for steamships and barges, the house became a sublime fusion of English country house and German half-timbered architecture. Following extensive renovations in 2020, Rutz-Zollhaus now marries the traditions of its location with the Rutz family’s commitment to uncompromising quality standards. Bright rooms awash with modern lighting and sleek interior design elements harmoniously coexist with open wine cabinets and dry aging fridges, all set against a backdrop of light plaster surfaces, grey sandstone, decorative reliefs, dark stained woods, and red tiled roofs. The culinary offerings draw inspiration from German cuisine and childhood memories, while showcasing a passion for regional products, Michelin-star expertise, Berlin-style hospitality and an exceptional selection of wines.
Rutz Family
Two restaurants, one philosophy: At Rutz Zollhaus and Rutz Restaurant, our shared philosophy is centred on an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service and offering top-quality products every day. In 2020, Rutz Restaurant, located on Chausseestraße in Mitte, became the first restaurant in Berlin to be awarded with three Michelin stars. Indulge in the sumptuous delights of Chef Marco Müller’s “Nature & Flavours” menu and discover the true meaning of culinary artistry, defined by an unparalleled commitment to excellence.
Team
Through the addition of Rutz Zollhaus, proprietors Anja and Carsten Schmidt have enriched their Rutz family with an authentic Berlin establishment. Renowned for their six Weinladen Schmidt wine boutiques, the Michelin-starred Rutz-Restaurant, and the Schmidt Z&KO culinary institute, the Schmidts have now fashioned an inviting atmosphere for relaxed hospitality, reminiscent of Herbert Beltle’s legendary Altes Zollhaus restaurant. Their wealth of expertise over the decades shapes the restaurant just as the fine craftsmanship and seasoned collaboration of head chef Florian Mennicken, kitchen director Marco Müller, restaurant manager Steffen Kellner and their team.
